COVID-19 Update

Given the current COVID-19 situation, we have postponed Canoe for Clean Water.

As the number of cases continues to rise across the country and with physical distancing measures still in effect, in addition to some local, provincial, and federal border closures (our route takes us briefly into the U.S.), it is neither possible nor responsible for us to proceed at this time.

Our original timeline had us leaving Toronto, ON this week and setting off on our cross-Canada canoe journey from Rocky Mountain House, AB in early May. However, over the last few weeks it has become apparent that physical distancing will remain in effect for many weeks and that the threat of coronavirus will be present for many months.

We take these risks and precautions very seriously. We also acknowledge the systemic challenges that make marginalized people more vulnerable, including many Indigenous communities that do not have access to clean water.

While we are disappointed by this set-back, we will only proceed with the canoe trip if it is safe to do so, for us and for others. Health comes first. We will continue to monitor the situation but we are not sure when our journey will begin or what it will look like when it does. At this time we are considering multiple options, including a modified route later in the summer or postponing until summer 2021.

Finally, our journey has always been, and continues to be, focused on connections: our connections to each other and to the waters around us. While our physical connections to each other have been intercepted and while our canoe trip has been postponed, Canoe for Clean Water remains steadfast in its mission to raise awareness about water challenges in Indigenous communities in Canada and to fundraise for the incredible charity Water First.

We will continue to update you with any decisions moving forward. In the meantime, we wish everyone good health during these trying times.

Sending love from us to you,

The Canoe for Clean Water crew
